I’m a rather bonkers 65 year old woman with autism, living with her husband in Surrey, England.
How I got the idea for this blog:
I recently watched a wonderful film called “I Swear”. I’d heard about the uproar surrounding a man with Tourette’s syndrome who attended an awards ceremony and unintentionally shouted inappropriate comments while several men were receiving an award on stage. When I discovered that a film had been made based on the story of his life, I decided to watch it.
After police officers wrongfully arrested him several times because they misunderstood his condition, at the request of the Police, he began educating children and adults about Tourette’s syndrome. He also offered support to others living with Tourette’s who felt deeply marginalized by society.
Why I started writing the blog
Now that I’ve been open about my diagnosis of Asperger’s Syndrome, women often approach me to ask about my experiences. Many tell me they “think they might have something” too.
That’s why I started this blog. I wrote it primarily for older women – women who lived much of their lives before neurodivergence, including autism/Asperger’s syndrome became a thing. It’s for women who have always felt different, who often struggle in social situations, and who find it difficult to fit in or make friends. They are left scratching their heads wondering what’s wrong with the people around them, never realizing that it is their own brains that are wired differently.
I want these women, and younger women who think they are on the same path, to discover that life can be good. Through my own experiences – the funny, joyful and sometimes heartbreaking – I hope to open doors that help you better understand yourself, find reassurance, and realize that you are not alone.
